I grew up with “real” soda in the house. Rootbeer was a household favorite, especially by my dad. It was the soda of choice when we all sat around and watched a movie with popcorn, or ordered Friday night pizza. Soda wasn’t a daily thing I drank, took to school or even wanted often. It was more of a weekly treat. And every now and then it still sounds good to have a refreshing, cold soda over crushed ice, but my days of “real” soda are long gone, and I don’t miss them. The thought of actual full-sugar soda makes me feel nauseous and tastes disgustingly sweet, so the moment I found Zevia I was in love. Zevia is a calorie-free, sugar-free and non-GMO soda that is sweetened with Stevia Extract, Monk Fruit Extract and, the only downfall, Erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol. They also don’t use artificial caramel coloring, so the sodas are clear. In addition, Zevia is caffeine-free, making it a great prenatal and postpartum choice for me and Baby Ford #2. The issue I have with sugar alcohols is that they can negatively affect digestion by resulting in gas, temporary bloating and/or stomach cramping. Half a can really satisfies me, and I drink Zevia the same way I did growing up: in moderation and as a treat, which is why I would recommend the same.
Now let’s talk about ice cream, because you can’t have a rooter float without the floating part! Below I’ve shared some of my favorite alternative and “real” ice creams for hot Summer days:
Luna & Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss – this creamy treat is non-dairy, gluten-free, non-GMO and made with ingredients like coconut milk, agave syrup and coconut cream, this comes in flavors such as Salted Caramel, Naked Coconut (my fave!), and Chocolate Walnut Brownie
Arctic Zero – this fit dessert is lactose-free, fat-free, gluten-free, non-GMO and made with ingredients like whey protein concentrate, organic cane sugar and monk fruit concentrate, comes in both creamy and chunky varieties with flavors such as Cookie Dough Chip, Simply Strawberry, Key Lime Pie and Cappuccino.
Alden’s Organic Ice Creams – this old fashioned ice cream is non-GMO and made with natural, whole ingredients like pasteurized organic milk and cream, organic cane sugar and organic vanilla extract and comes in flavors like Blackberry, Vanilla Bean and Light Milk Chocolate. A classic taste, without the nasty corn syrups and other fillers.
A perfect sweet treat, here is my IgniteGirls-Style Rootbeer Float recipe!
- 1 can chilled Rootbeer Ginger Zevia
- 1 serving vanilla ice cream of your choice (I opted for a classic ice cream taste like Alden’s for this recipe)
- sprinkling of cinnamon (optional)
Scoop your ice cream of choice into a glass. Pour Zevia slowly over the top making sure not to froth over. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a sassy, fat-burning punch. It goes well with the spicy ginger twist already in the soda.
I hope that these ice cream suggestions help you in the grocery store aisles, and that this recipe helps to satisfy your hankering sweet tooth. Let me know what kind of spin you put on your float in the comments below.. peanut butter drizzle? Chocolate ice cream?
